Cattery software: what a working cattery actually needs

Most breeding software was built for dogs and had "cats" bolted on — if cats made it in at all. Here's what a real cattery needs from its software, what's nice to have, and what you can safely skip.

Cat breeders get the leftovers. Most "breeder software" leads with kennels, whelping, and AKC paperwork, then waves vaguely at catteries — you end up recording queens as "dams" in a system that thinks every animal barks. So before you evaluate any tool (including ours — Kinvara runs catteries as a first-class citizen, and yes, we're biased), it helps to be clear about what a working cattery actually needs software to do.

The non-negotiables

1. It has to actually speak cat

Queens and studs, kittens, TICA and CFA registration fields, breed-appropriate health records (an HCM echo with a date is not the same thing as a hip score). If the software makes you mentally translate from dog vocabulary, you'll fight it forever — and worse, your buyer-facing pages will read wrong to the families you're trying to impress.

2. A kitten waitlist with real order

The heart of a cattery's admin is the same as any breeding program's: who applied, who's approved, who has a deposit down, and who gets which kitten in what order. The software should keep those stages separate and timestamped, so pick order is a fact rather than a negotiation. (The system is the same one we lay out in our waitlist guide — swap puppies for kittens.)

3. Records that start at birth and follow the cat

Per-litter logs — birth dates, sexes, colors, daily weights — plus per-kitten care schedules: vaccinations, deworming, microchips, vet checks. A kitten that stalls on the scale is the earliest health warning you'll get, so weight tracking shouldn't live in a separate app. Our cattery records guide covers what to track; the software's job is making it one entry instead of five.

4. Contracts and money, attached to the kitten

Spay/neuter agreements, health guarantees, deposits, and balance payments — signed and paid online, and attached to the specific kitten and family, not floating in an email account. Verify the money lands directly in your account and the software takes no cut beyond your card processor's own fee.

5. Something for the families to look at

Kitten families are the most photo-hungry buyers in the animal world — many are waiting months for a kitten they chose from a birth announcement. A buyer portal where each family watches their own kitten grow — photos, weights, documents, payments in one place — turns your record keeping into your marketing. This is the feature that generates referrals.

Nice to have, not essential

What you can skip

Show-scheduling modules, social-media autoposting, genetics calculators that duplicate what your DNA panel provider already gives you — none of these are why catteries drown in admin. The drowning comes from seams: the application in email, the deposit in a payment app, the weights in a notebook, the contract in a folder. Buy the tool that removes seams, not the one with the longest feature list.

The questions to ask any vendor

Price is the easy comparison (most serious platforms run $25–50/month — our pricing guide breaks down the models and traps, and our compare page has verified numbers). The harder questions matter more: Can I export everything and leave? Does the buyer see a portal or just emails? Does it need my website rebuilt on their platform? Is there a human who answers?

Where Kinvara stands

Kinvara was built two-species from the ground up: choose cats when you set up your program and every screen speaks cattery — queens, kittens, TICA/CFA fields, HCM-style dated health documents, kitten waitlists, e-sign contracts, and payments straight to your own account. One flat $39/month, everything included, 30-day free trial, no card. See Kinvara for catteries for the full tour.

The right cattery software is the one where writing it down once is the whole filing system — and the family gets to watch.

Try Kinvara free for 30 days — no credit card, and if your records live in a spreadsheet today, we'll import them for you, free.
